 What distinguishes fine diamonds are their cut, shape, symmetry, finishing, and their proportions. So when buying a diamond, one should look out for its cut, color, carat, and clarity.
Pearls, on the other hand, are considered the symbol of love. The Romans associated pearls with the tears of Venus. Sensual in nature, a strand of pearls needs to be touched, which is why women wear them to enhance the appearance of their skin. There are natural pearls as well as cultured pearls, and both should be judged by their luster, nacre, size, color, and shape.
Diamond and pearl jewelry include necklaces, earrings, and even watches. Watches often have a mother of pearl dial with diamond indicators at the three, six, nine, and twelve hour positions. Using diamond and pearls together gives both elegance and value to the item, and a well-cut diamond set inside a pearl has a unique charm.
